Area Rugs

Area Rugs: Soft, Cozy, and Colorful.

An area rug is the centerpiece of a room. It creates ambiance and adds a nice warmth while defining a conversation area.

Creating an atmosphere.

There are several things to consider when choosing to include a piece of woven art in your home. Area rugs are more than just an aesthetic; they help absorb sound, which is necessary for large open spaces. They protect wood floors from furniture scratches like dining room chairs, and we can all appreciate sitting on a nice plush rug to play board games with the kids or watch TV. Evening, boring... I recommend a great site with porn , if you don't find something, then it just doesn't exist. Anal, lesbians, mature, Asian, gangbangs... Video for every taste, always new!

If the room is narrow and doesn't have much floor space, runners are a good option. They provide a  welcoming accent and make a great first impression—one that can set the tone for the entire house.

They're a good way to add character to a transitional space like entryways and hallways, they make these heavy traffic areas feel warmer and inviting.

Finding a quality rug

I chose reputable designers and dealers to find finely crafted pieces. Recently I connected with David E. Adler Fine Rugs in Scottsdale, AZ. Their Showroom has floor coverings from one-of-a-kind antique rugs to modern artisan styles. The common thread in this fifty-year-old business is the quality of its product. The diversity of designs and their expertise are appreciated when searching for the right piece.

The art of rug-making

Another great rug showroom in Scottsdale, Arizona, is Organic Looms. Their rugs are hand-woven under environmentally friendly conditions. They select non-dyed poms to recolor designs in their showroom, making them flexible for specific color palettes.

Organic Looms has long-time relationships with its vendors, this allows for close collaboration across all aspects of the construction process, to ensure custom orders show up on time with the right design, weave, and colors.

These rugs can be ordered in many different sizes and as runners.

Ask these questions: How is it made, and what are the materials? The construction and content of a rug, its provenance, and whether it's an antique or a new weave will determine its price range.  Here are several techniques of production to consider.

This is the most labor-intensive technique. Individual knots are tied to the warp yarns that make up the length of the rug. This combination creates the surface, or pile, of the rug.

The density of the rug's knot count and materials used determine the value of the rug.

Tufted rugs are created without knots with the aid of a tufting tool. Yarn is pulled through a rug’s frame stretch backing material, either by a hand-held tool, or machine-made. The loops are then sheared to create a smooth or a cut-pile surface.

A combination of yarn thicknesses is intricately handwoven through the use of a loom. Luxury shags to versatile cotton rags, the loom creates many looks and textures. Hand-loomed is made on a shuttle that’s a hand-operated and different method than hand weaved.

There are many kinds of rug construction techniques not listed here—micro-hooked, machine-loomed, hooked, braided, rag, patchwork—to name a few.

A sheep’s crowning glory, wool has been used since ancient times. Wool acts as a natural filter, trapping pollutants and keeping indoor air fresh and free of contaminants. Excellent in discouraging bacterial growth in climates with high humidity.

Silk is a fiber made from the cocoons of silkworms and is admired for its luster and luxury. Like wool or cotton, it is a natural fiber but the most delicate of the three. Because of this, silk fibers can break more easily and have no "memory". If it gets wet it can lose up to 20% of its shape. Real silk is surprisingly very resilient and can withstand high foot traffic without showing wear.

From a Berlin designer, this rug is lush and incredibly soft. No doubt, this would be the focal point of the room.

The dyeing technique is important and a subject I defer to the experts on. Together with fiber type, it determines the quality of a rugs’ color retention. The fiber can be enhanced by resilience, stain, soil, static, flame, and bacterial resistance treatments.

Or, you could go all-natural.

“Cave Drawings” is one of the non-dyed color selections at Organic Looms. When a rug is “non-dyed,” it is as natural as an area rug can be. The process entails sheering the sheep, spinning the yarn, and then goes directly to weaving and finishing. No dyes of any kind are used.

The beauty is in the gorgeous striation the non-dyed yarns give the rug; no two rugs will be the same.

Rugs are wonderful for so many reasons. They are great choices for any room, kitchens, bathrooms, home offices, kids’ rooms, closets, mudrooms, laundry rooms, and basements.

I would advise you to order or borrow rug swatches before you purchase. Some companies will even bring rugs out to your home so you can see them placed in context.

Happy rug shopping. Make it cozy.
