Techniques
Ask these questions: How is it made, and what are the materials? The construction and content of a rug, its provenance, and whether it's an antique or a new weave will determine its price range. Here are several techniques of production to consider.
Hand-knotted
This is the most labor-intensive technique. Individual knots are tied to the warp yarns that make up the length of the rug. This combination creates the surface, or pile, of the rug.
The density of the rug's knot count and materials used determine the value of the rug.

Silk
Silk is a fiber made from the cocoons of silkworms and is admired for its luster and luxury. Like wool or cotton, it is a natural fiber but the most delicate of the three. Because of this, silk fibers can break more easily and have no "memory". If it gets wet it can lose up to 20% of its shape. Real silk is surprisingly very resilient and can withstand high foot traffic without showing wear.

Dyeing
The dyeing technique is important and a subject I defer to the experts on. Together with fiber type, it determines the quality of a rugs’ color retention. The fiber can be enhanced by resilience, stain, soil, static, flame, and bacterial resistance treatments.

“Cave Drawings” is one of the non-dyed color selections at Organic Looms. When a rug is “non-dyed,” it is as natural as an area rug can be. The process entails sheering the sheep, spinning the yarn, and then goes directly to weaving and finishing. No dyes of any kind are used.
