The Importance of Color

Mocha Mousse - Pantone Color of the Year 2025

It sets the mood, influences decision-making and has the power to energize and inspire.  Color is a powerful tool indeed.  It affects our visual world in big ways and has a culturally significant impact on our lives…for example, The White House or the Golden Gate Bridge.

Color can change how we feel.  Would you rather wake up in a room painted with a sunny yellow color or one with darker tones?  Yellow often connotates happiness or energy, while black suggests a more somber mood.  Of course, personal preference and cultural differences play a big part in this as well.  In China, Denmark, and Argentina, red symbolizes luckiness.

As you can see, color is an important topic of discussion, especially in the design and creative industry.  Here at Lauren Jacobsen Interior Design, we desire to use color in your home in tasteful, impactful ways that reflect your personal style.  We work hard to create an “oasis” for you that provides a restful and pleasant escape from the outside world.  Our interior design in Scottsdale and across the USA reflects this approach to color and luxury home design.

What is the 2025 Pantone color of the year?

Pantone LLC is an American company that has come to be synonymous with color.  The “Pantone Matching System” is a recognized system that enables designers from many disciplines to communicate their color choice(s) to producers in a consistent fashion.  This ensures that what the designer envisions is what you get!

Since 1999, Pantone has announced an annual “Color of the Year” to help forecast upcoming color trends.  It’s an exciting announcement that future-forward designers like to consider when selecting interior color schemes for a home.  This year, the 2025 Pantone color is Mocha Mousse.

Why is the color significant?

As a shade of brown, PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse (https://www.pantone.com/color-of-the-year/2025/) is a neutral, earthy color that can easily adapt to formal or informal settings.  The title of the color refers to “mocha”, which is a type of coffee bean originating in the Middle East, while “mousse” refers to the light, airy quality of this shade of brown.  Mocha Mousse is a luxurious, chocolatey brown that is alluring and modern.  Both coffee and chocolate are treats that provide an escape from the stresses of everyday life.

At the same time, brown is a centering color that is comforting and reliable.  There’s a reason that UPS used the slogan “what can brown do for you?” for many years!  After all, everyone wants to consistently receive their parcels in one piece.  In addition, we all long for the comfort and peace that comes from time spent outdoors.  What better way to bring the outdoors in than with a reliable and grounding color like brown?!

As a luxury home designer in Scottsdale, AZ, our firm is well-equipped to create the custom color scheme your home needs to reflect these calming and indulgent traits.  We’ll talk about some color applications for interior design in Scottsdale next…

How does the color affect choices for interior design in 2025?

When you think of luxury, what comes to mind?  For interior designers, luxury homes often feature soft and hard goods that are a step above the rest.  This includes hardwood flooring throughout a home or marble countertops in the kitchen and / or bathroom.  To incorporate the 2025 Mocha Mousse color in your space, our firm may suggest a stain color for your wood floors that emphasizes soft, warm brown tones or marble with a brown veining pattern.  High-quality leather furniture provides a luxurious resting place in a living area…and is available in lovely brown shades.

For your walls, Mousse is a great option that effortlessly transitions from modern to traditional, depending on the complementary colors and styling that accompanies it.  In our design consultation with you, we’ll strive to find the ideal balance of colors for your specific needs.  Another way to introduce brown into your room would be through a commissioned piece of artwork.  What better way to stand out with a luxury add to your home than through art?!

Here are other luxury must-haves for 2025 interior design in Scottsdale:

High-Quality Goods – As mentioned, hardwood flooring and marble countertops fit in this category.  Additional options might include tapestries or rugs, custom plumbing fixtures etc.

  • Tech-Savvy Spaces - Using tech to make your space luxurious might involve adding a surround-sound system in your living room or high-tech kitchen appliances to make cooking and baking as “easy as pie.”

  • Custom Woodwork – Woodwork will greatly enhance the style of your home and add a handcrafted feel to your space.  Custom installations may include wall paneling, cabinetry or built-ins, stair railing and more.

  • Statement Light Fixtures - In a home, you’ll need a combination of task lighting (such as for reading a book or at a desk), accent lighting (to highlight bookshelves or interesting architectural details in a room) and ambient lighting (to light the space as a whole).  Cheap lighting just won’t cut it…you need fixtures that are proportionally appropriate for your space and that will aesthetically fit within a whole house interior design plan.

  • Exercise and Workout Areas – Forget the hassle of going to a gym…add your own swimming pool, sauna or exercise room at home.

Mocha Mousse Envelops Homeowners with a Comforting Hue

How might Lauren Jacobsen Interior Design use Mocha Mousse in a home to evoke feelings of comfort?  Drapery, pillows and blankets all provide tactile comfort while also visually softening a space.  As color consultants we may choose a variation of brown for these soft goods or might select another neutral color to complement the room’s overall design.

If you’re looking for a relaxing oasis, you probably will prefer a minimalist style.  That’s because clutter equals stress.  After all, how can you relax while looking at a pile of unfinished projects or children’s toys?  Our interior designers will learn your needs (family with young children, active seniors, busy professional single etc) and tailor your home so you can live comfortably.  We’ll help you with practical storage solutions to hide unnecessary visual clutter.

Of course, a minimalist style also translates to a color scheme with less contrasting colors and more neutrals, such as Mocha Mousse.  Calming colors help create comforting spaces.

Here are some other ways we can add comfort to your home…

  • Layered bedding and linens with a high-quality thread count. Use lots of pillows that make you want to “jump in and relax” at the end of the day.

  • Pop some popcorn and relax in the comfort of your own home theater system. Why mess with a crowded movie theater when you can put up your feet and indulge at home?!

Mocha Mousse Encourages Harmony with the Outdoors and Surrounding Spaces

Why not embrace harmony with nature by indulging your green thumb in the house?  As part of our design work, we can select a few tasteful houseplants that will transform your space and connect the inside of the home with the outside.  Since brown is a color found in nature, it pairs nicely with plants and other natural materials.

Of course, you don’t have to water and tend to live plants to reflect your love for nature.  Our interior design experts may select a stone coffee table or plush fabric occasional chairs to bring natural brown elements into your space.  Some natural complements to brown may include shells from the seaside or various applications of grey, white or other neutral-colored stone in the room.  Or, add a water feature within your home to add the calming white noise of falling water.  Each of these work towards creating a harmonious design that is peaceful and calming.

We discussed light fixtures earlier, but another component to this is natural lighting!  One terrific way to harmonize with the outdoors is through windows.  Natural light illuminates an indoor space in magical ways and the correct placement of a window can make or break your room.  For a bedroom, a custom built-in window seat offers the perfect combination of light, coziness, calm and a serene outlook on the outdoors.

Choosing the right paint color isn’t for the faint of heart.  In fact, it’s best left up to the experts, as paint can quickly transform your space in good…or bad…ways.  We can work with you on a paint color consultation to select a harmonious scheme that will tie together your spaces and make the whole house sing as one.
