Preparing The Guest Room

Guest Room Preparation

You may be hosting family or friends over the holidays so a few reminders on setting up a guest room might help.  The thought of a fine hotel room comes to mind and your company would love that experience as well.

I like to have open space in a guest room, not too much clutter and plenty of flat surfaces.

You will want to be sure it is easy for your guests to find light lamp switches and have a light control near the bed for lighting to read by.  I also like to place night lights in the room as well.

It is very nice to have a good mattress available to your company but if you don’t have a separate room or need additional sleeping accommodations, an air mattress is the way to go.  They can be very comfortable and be placed on top of a sofa bed or directly on the floor.   If your guests are spending more than a couple of days, you could add a bed topper or a featherbed mattress topper for additional comfort.

Fine linens and a down comforter are the best way to emulate that five-star room and welcome your guests.  Extra pillows, blankets (both light and heavy) and a throw for that afternoon nap are great way to keep them cozy in their space.

When they in their room, they will need a place to leave their suitcase so you might want to get a luggage rack or have a small bench or even a chair for them to set them on.  You should have a chair for seating in the room as well as some people would prefer that to sitting on the bed.

For clothes, if you have closet space, don’t forget to supply a variety of hangers.  If there isn’t a closet,  an inexpensive over-the-door hook could work.  Drawer space is also great to have as is a hook for a robe, coat or a purse.  A full length mirror is great for a guest room.

A set of towels just for your guests can be set in their room if you don’t have a separate bathroom.

I like to set out flowers and have a fragrant offering of potpourri or candles for my guests.

Sometimes I will put in a design surprise in their room and place toiletries in a container like this luggage decor or something unexpected like a collection of pottery or table of candles.  Something with a little ‘wow’ factor.

Don’t forget to have a clock in the room.  One would not want to be late for dinner.

For the best approach to ensuring your guests have all the comforts away from home when they visit you, spend the night in your own guest room and see how it feels.
