More Trends and Style Forecasting for 2016

Let’s continue looking at what is being forecast as trends in 2016 for home furnishings.  The best part of being and interior designer is having the privilege to work with fine artists and craftsman who create incredible works of art to put into the home.  It is always amazing to see what they are doing.

ARTISTS AND NATURE

Fortunately, hand-crafted furnishings and accessories are becoming more available and as craftsman are creating more one-of-a-kind pieces, we embrace their exploration of new techniques and because of that, we are seeing a revival in creativity.

Baker Furniture ArtistryThey are customizing pieces in unexpected ways and are bringing back the use of materials such agate, rock crystals, horn, bone and marble and resin.  Natural stones and organic fibers evocative of a more earthy space are prominent.

I believe that organic and earth-friendly materials are no longer a “trend” but the standard and a welcome one at that.  We are seeing their natural shape effect the final pieces as well, such as more sensuous, rounded corners and curvy lines.  With that comes the welcoming of the ‘imperfection’ in a piece

I am of the mindset that organic and earth-friendly materials are no longer a “trend” but a standard and with that, we are seeing them effect the shape of things as well, such as more sensuous, rounded corners and curvy lines.  With that comes the welcoming of the ‘imperfection’ in a piece.  This is a subject I will have to delve further into in a future post.  The work being done today is incredible.  I am really impressed with the craftsmanship and companies let creativity drive the direction of their work.  Truly beautiful.

FLORALS

Yes, there is a real trend in the “pretty” and feminine sense of style.  The feeling of opulence is being achieved by incorporating florals, ruffles, touching and jewel-like adornment.  We are seeing classic motifs with a modern twist.

SILVER, GOLD AND WHITES

Sometimes a clean, bright space is just the thing.  The combination of gilded surfaces and neutral, flat whites lives on. The choice of the textures and metals details are the key to a timeless look.  In today’s market there are many materials to choose from such as acrylics, Plexiglas and natural quartz.  And your styling can be taken from classic to modern.  I really like the combinations of white, grey and beige here.

What is on its way out?

Machined metal-that industrial machine shop look has run its course along with everything in mid century modern. Unless you have an Eichler mid-mod home and you are a purist, both styles have hit the mass market for the last year or so and they’re done.

As a designer, my style is all about the mix, not the match. I keep it classic, clean lines and nature inspired, so its timeless with that calming presence from nature we all need these days.  Contact me to make your space a perfect fit for you.
